Winery of the week: Vignoble du Rêveur
March 13, 2017
Located in Bennwihr, in Alsace’s Haut-Rhine region, this 17-acre domaine is tended by Mathieu Deiss, son of one of Alsace’s most provocative winemakers, Marcel Deiss, whose viticultural heritage dates to 1744.
With training from his father and with vineyards inherited from his grandfather, Mathieu has gradually reclaimed the parcel near Kaysersberg, reverting it back to its natural state: 100% organic agriculture (certified Ecocert) or certified biodynamic under the rigorous Demeter standards. His project started in 2013.
Mathieu cultivates Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, making both single-varietal wines and blends. He uses indigenous yeasts and no added sulfur. Like his father, he is terroir-driven, and blends grapes if, indeed, that is the best expression of the plot. He vinifies at his father’s’ winery, where he is still responsible for winemaking.
