Winery of the Week: M. Chapoutier
March 20, 2019
Though he is most known in the Rhone Valley, where he is the largest owner of Hermitage vines, Michel Chapoutier has had a presence in Alsace since 2009 near the communes of Reichsfeld and Bernardvillé. Here, he runs Domaine Schieferkopf, a terroir-driven property in the Rhine River basin based on granite, limestone, clay, schist (blue and black) and sandstone soils. His Alsace vineyards—the Fels, Buehl and Berg lieux-dites—are all south facing and cultivate 20-year-old single-vineyard Riesling vines. Chapoutier also makes an AOC Alsace Riesling Via Saint-Jacques. All of the wines are hand harvested and certified organic.
