Wine of the Week: Laurent Barth Pinot Gris 2015
March 19, 2018
An organic producer since 2004, the domaine of Laurent Barth extends around Bennwihr, just southeast of Riquewihr, and in the heart of Alsace’s wine country.
Barth’s Pinot Gris grapes are grown in granitic soil, which expresses minerality in the nose and on the palate. This lemon-colored wine delivers rich notes of white flowers, ripe yellow apples and bright herbs (think menthol!). Dry on the palate, the ripeness of the fruit gives a touch of demi-sec. There’s plenty of acid to accompany the flavors of nectarine, mandarin orange peel and Asian fruit, elderflower and a bit of chamomile. Mouth coating with a spicy ginger finish, this wine can pair with white meats, sausage, or a hearty sausage, white bean and tortellini soup. Enjoy it now, or let it age.
