Wine of the Week: François Baur Gewurztraminer Herrenweg 2015
February 25, 2019
Established in Turckheim in 1741, the family-run domaine is now under the care of brothers Pierre and Thomas Baur. It has been certified organic since 1998 and biodynamic since 2001.
From their “Tradition” line, this Gewurztraminer is a full but lively version of the classic for which Alsace is known.
In addition to the classic aroma markers for Gewurztraminer—rose petals and lychee—this wine boasts a rich, vibrant nose with notes of tropical and exotic fruits such as pineapple, mango, and passion fruit. While it has a robust offering on the nose, a dry mineral streak on the palate makes it light on its feet. The palate is elevated by spiced orange rind and tangerine, a light honeyed note, and a sprinkling of ginger, clove, and white pepper. This is a charming and expressive wine that will find its place on the table alongside any spicy Asian cuisine or with soft cheeses.
