Wine of the Week: Charles Sparr Crémant d’Alsace Brut NV
February 20, 2018
The Sparr family has been making wine in Alsace since 1680, and Charles (son of Pierre, owner of another label), is the 12th generation of the family to continue the tradition.
Made of 100% Pinot Blanc, this Crémant d’Alsace Brut has a pleasing light-gold color with lively bubbles. The nose is restrained at first, but gives way to lemon, apple and hints of brioche. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, rich wine with layers of baked yellow apple, lemon and a slight taste of caramel. It’s dry and earthy but fresh with a fine, smooth mousse. It’s an ideal aperitif, or accompaniment to light appetizers. At less than $20, it’s an affordable Alsace, delivering high quality for excellent value.
